Coventry’s National 1 league appearances to date…

I thought it might be useful just to have a quick look at a table of the total number of appearances made by Coventry players so far this season.  If my adding up is correct, and that’s by no means a given, we have used a total of 38 players in the 15 games played so far with 35 different players being given a starting place and a further 3 used only as replacements.

38 players seems a lot, considering we are less than half way through the season, but without having the stats from previous seasons, it is impossible tell. Only two players, Dom Lespierre and Andy Brown, have started every game and only 10 have started in 50% of the games, which against suggests there hasn’t been consistency in selection, for whatever reason, be it a lack of form, poor result or injuries.

Maybe it just reflects the coaches attempts to get the right balance of players, something that they seemed to take a while to do as a result of the injuries that occurred pre-season? Or, perhaps, the need to make changes to a side that was simply losing too many matches

Only Dom has played for the full 80 in every game. His 15 points suggests that Coventry have struggled to get make use of him as effectively as they would have hoped, or perhaps teams have paid closer attention to him this season, being all to aware of the impact he made just 12 months ago.

There are some quite interesting things that can be extrapolated from the table below – for instance, Wayne Evans has been replaced more times than any other player so far this season. There’s no indication of how long left in each game the replacements are made, but as Wayne is the club captain and is one of the most experienced players, I’d have expected him to have been on the pitch longer…? Fitness, the need to give the understudy a run out or just simply not as effective in the day as hoped…?

Given Devlin Hope has made just 3 starts and only 8 appearances in total, his 25 points from 5 tries (equal second highest try scorer) is fairly impressive and suggests he makes  a real impact when he does get on.

Matt Price, who also has 5 tries to his name, remains first choice hooker presumably for his all round game. The  club is very lucky to have two such players competing for the same position .

There are probably 8-10 players who have appeared for the club who now seem a long way off a reappearance which again seems a high number…and 5 of those came to us as part of the original summer recruitment campaign suggesting, perhaps, that they haven’t quite performed as expected or the expectations of them were a little too high?

Anyway…worth a look, if only to remind yourself of who has actually played and how often.

I hasten to add this is not something I’ve spent time on producing…!

Many thanks to Statbunker….
